Ghosts of the Civil Dead

It's designed to provoke an emotional response

Have I ever seen the same cut of Blade Runner more than once? Most likely, but not for a long time. I can't say the Final Cut added anything spectacular apart from some interesting transitions, but it certainly is a beautiful movie. They don't make them like that any more. They don't make them to look like that either, for reasons which escape me somewhat.

It has reminded us we should watch our director's cut of Dark City, at least (having failed to organise a group for it).

Meanwhile, I went through the Batman: Arkham Asylum demo on the xbox. It was short, but looks pretty cool. Hanging upside from a gargoyle is just one of those things you need to do.

I'm a little askance that Harley Quinn is apparently a Lolita sexbot now -- or an "an unhygienic, S&M nurse" as one comment had it. These things happen (apparently). Tangentially, I know there's not a lot of love for the Birds of Prey TV show, but I thought Mia Sara did an excellent job as Dr Quinzel therein.

Such speculation led me to this. I have a dislike for fan-made trailers and the like (mostly when they get mixed up with the real thing on YouTube), but these do look good: Batman 3 fake posters.
Clive Barker

(no subject)

I mention DA occasionally -- that is the SMH (and Age) cryptic crossword designer David Astle (also a playwright and travel reporter, among other things no doubt).

His crosswords have now moved to Saturday, which is a bit of a pain, but I'm sure I'll cope. If you wonder why I single him out specifically -- there are 5 other creators in the Herald, let alone elsewhere -- it's because he is consistently the cleverest of them. Often the hardest as well, but not because he relies on obscure words, just misdirection and twisted logic. Here's an example from the weekend:
Snow boarders, perhaps, sell wax by drop in supplies (5, 7)
He also makes amazing themed puzzles, and can pack an incredible amount of related detail into a constrained format.

Not that I can consistently finish them, I should add. I have done so, but more often fall short.

This is just a random appreciation from me. I'm glad he's still around (especially after one indication he was leaving).
