It doesn't appear to have been announced officially anywhere, but I recently won a cryptic clue competition in honour of David Astle's Puzzled. Today the prize turned up, a $500 reference library. Groovy.

Now, if only I had somewhere to put it all. (Our 1980s Encyclopedia Britannica is scattered on the floor behind me, after a small furniture malfunction.)

Edit: the results are now up. And we managed to get the books neatly arranged as well.

Excellent prize. Well done, fellow DA fan.

I thank you.

My first observation is that the rhyming dictionary has a particularly diverse collection of quotes in it.

That is so fabulous! I'm livid with jealousy. Although I have nowhere to keep the books either.

My second observation is that an almanac is apparently incomplete without a list of types of cheese.

That's a sadly under-researched almanac. Although cheese types do change by the day.

To be clear, cheese types are covered. Completeness has been achieved.

All is right then. I am even more livid with jealousy and I didn't think there was a shade more livid than livid.

Livid well is the best revenge.

Luchy Bastard.

What happened with the Britannica? Did the shelves break?

December 22 2010, 21:57:47 UTC 1 year ago

Yup. This wouldn't happen to a wiki.

You need stronger shelves. That's why library shelving is made of metal. Use hardwood next time. Or put them on the bottom shelf.

They fell onto the other half of the Britannica, which was indeed on the bottom shelf.

They fell on the cats?

Lovely photo. So you have three cats now?

One is but an itinerant, before being heading down to Melbourne.

Haven't decided which, though...

I'd keep the one that doesn't scratch the furniture.

Although I guess it could leak. Ha ha um.

I am so freakin' envious of this - not so much of the prize, although it does look totally excellent, but of the fact that you won something off DA. :D

I put a DA reference into one of my clues. I figure he'd like that.
